Thank you for all the well wishes, good thoughts, and positive vibes. Oh, and for the good juju and prayers too.
Grandma is out of surgery. She is up in one of the rooms. They say she’ll need to stay in the hospital for a few days. Its tough cause she doesn’t speak any English. Though, she does speak Mandarin and you’d think that that would be easy enough in Southern California. Mom and my aunt are taking turns staying at the hospital with her.
I guess now she just has to go through the road of physical therapy.
I’ll go see her later tonight with my parents.
So this is grandma. She’s currently in surgery. It’s a total knee replacement. Not sure when this was taken. My uncle posted it on his Facebook page today. I believe it may be from last December when she was visiting family back in Indonesia. She is holding one of her great grandkids in this picture (my cousin’s kid).
Hopefully everything goes well. I’m sure she’s eager to go back to her morning routine of walking 2 miles a day.
Surgery Tomorrow
Mom called me earlier this week. Grandma is going under the knife tomorrow to have her knee replaced. I don’t know the details of the type of operation. She couldn’t really say. It’s good, though. Her knee has been bothering her for some time now. But I’m going home and staying at the parents’ place tonight. Mom thought I should be at the hospital tomorrow.
I won’t be able to do anything. My presence won’t make a difference. And I don’t think my grandmother will care if I am there or not. But my grandmother speaks pretty much zero English. For my mom, it is her second language. Neither of them have any medical training. So mom wants me there when the surgeon comes out to meet the family and when the nurses give instructions for post-op care.
Surgery is scary. I have seen the fear in the eyes of patients and their families. I think that a large part of the fear is the fear of the unknown.
There is nothing much for me to do by being present tomorrow. But at the same time, there is a whole lot for me to do tomorrow.

Stories From Korea
As you know, the sister is in Korea. She has been teaching there since the beginning of the month. One of the classes she teaches is a Bible class. At her first Bible class she met one student who is an older gentleman with an adult son.
And when I say that she met one student, I mean that she met one student. He was the only person in the class.
Anyways, he proceeded to regale her with stories of how wonderful his son was and that he worked at some large Korean corporation. Ignoring the fact that my sister said she had a boyfriend back home, he told her that he wanted her to date his son. And proceeded to try and sell her on the idea.
And thus began my sister’s teaching career in a land far, far away.

Mom and dad were supposed to go to a wedding near me today. Mom has been saying for a week she isn’t sure she will be able to make it. I’ve been telling her for a week she should just go.
Well dad just called. Mom isn’t going.
I’ll be his +1 today.
Gotta start making myself look presentable now.

I just came home from our second family Christmas party. Last week we had it with dad’s side of the family. Tonight we got together with mom’s side.
At one point my aunt and mother were calling for all the kids to take a picture together in front of the tree. The youngest was a 2 year old toddler. I was the 27 year old “kid” — the oldest in the bunch.
As they called out for everyone, I didn’t really move from my couch until someone called me out by name. I started slowly getting up and my uncle leaned over and said:
You better hurry up, get married, and have kids if you want these indignities to stop.
I guess everyone thinks I’m slow.

Thanksgiving Family Picture
It’s mom’s birthday today. My sister printed out a picture of them and bought mom a frame. I bought mom KitKats.
