I'll admit it...
as much as it sucks that my mom is thought to have shingles…. A part of me is giving myself a high-five for calling it.  I’m a bad son.

Poor Mother
It’s almost been two weeks since my mom started having her headache. I’ve blogged about it already. During this time she has gone to urgent care, the emergency department, her primary doctor and an acupuncturist to try and relieve the pain. Serious medical emergencies have been ruled out. So last friday she noticed a new symptom. A blistering rash. I looked at it and thought it looked...

musingandmulling replied to your photo: Almost two weeks of this headache. Medical work up… Poor mom. Could it be stress? I can get muscle tension headaches that last for days and days, waxes and wanes, but never leaves. I actually do think it is stress-related. Or at least it has a contribution from stress. She needs to let it out…

Headaches
Mom came over yesterday with dad. She was complaining about a headache. And then I realized this is the same headache she told me about mid-week.  She had been having a constant headache since Tuesday that was a 7-8/10 on a pain scale. That’s 4 days of a constant headache! And although she has a history of headaches, this one felt different than any one she had in the past. She told me the...

Overheard In The VA
#1: It's kind of weird saying Happy Valentine's Day to a guy... Are you sure you were in the Marine Corp?

Cold Turkey
I used the phrase today while seeing a patient. Actually, right now I can’t even remember if I was the one to say it or if my patient said it. Or maybe it wasn’t even said at all and we just talked about stopping a habit cold turkey. Which got me wondering about the phrase “cold turkey.” It’s an odd phrase, don’t you think? I’m sure the entomologists out...

Mistakes
Jumping into a bad situation is a big mistake. But you can always get out. And that sort of fixes things. The bigger mistake is running away from a great situation. Because once you leave, you might never find your way back. And that makes this the biggest mistake one can make.

Death Is Hard
In the past I have found it easy to say that it is harder to see a sick, hospitalized child than a sick, hosptitalized elderly patient. It is easy to reason that the senior citizen has lived a full life while the child has his future ahead of him. But I think this position ignores the viewpoint of the patient’s family. Sure, sometimes a family is prepared for the death of a dying grandfather...
