chiclet replied to your post: Got Pimped Today
Aren’t you suypposed to pop a candy bar into your mouth to buy time, then he grows tired of waiting and moves onto the next guy?
Unfortunately, this attending was intent on waiting until we figured out the answer — even if it meant the whole class sat in silence as one person squirmed under the spotlight. He did, though, verbally walking us...

What’s that on the side?
That is some apple cobbler on the side. And a fork.

Got Pimped Today
I got pimped today in lecture. (FYI, “pimped” is medical education speak for being put on the spot by the attending and drilled for answers. This usually involves an audience too.).
He was asking me something about the hemodynamics of the heart in aortic stenosis. One of the things he asked me was to tell the class which of the physical exam findings (that were discussed a few slides...

Anonymous asked: What made you "different" in terms of being admitted into Medical School?
This small question has been echoing through my mind for the past few days which makes me seriously doubt myself and my sanity. It seems as though being "different" has become the new value system for med school applicants and thinking about an answer on why I stand out from my peers or whether or...

Today absolutely sucked
Today sucked. Tomorrow is the last day of my 3 weeks at the county hospital. I was thinking I was getting into the groove of things and today happened.
I was sent to admit a patient who spoke practically zero English. He had a diabetic ulcer. Well I have never admitted anyone with a diabetic foot ulcer. This guy had 3 large ulcers that had bloody, pus filled fluid oozing out.
I felt lost. I...
ninjatengu replied to your post:What publication do you read to keep up with today’s healthcare policies?
kff.org is great to keep up with US healthcare/health policy. They have great resources for those that are just getting started and then some. Also, amsa.org/hp has a lot of good stuff and can put you in contact w/ppl who know about their issues.
Thanks! I’ll have to check it out.
paxochka replied to your post: Three Weeks
Do you notice that when someone is diagnosed with something like cancer they deteriorate so rapidly you can barely blink? But they’ve probably had this same disease undiagnosed for years and been seemingly fine.
Yes. I cannot believe how fast some of the people I’ve seen have deteriorated. It really makes you pause and think about how fragile...

Mom
Mom just messaged me on Yahoo! Messenger.
Told me that her thyroid biopsy came back negative.
My reply: What biopsy? When did you have a biopsy?!?
And now Yahoo is telling me that she went idle. Way to break news to me, mother!
But yeah, at least it’s negative.

Three Weeks
A 3 week stint at a county hospital isn’t very long. Three weeks, with one day off per week, is 18 days of coming in every day.
But a lot can happen in 18 days. Three weeks is long enough for me to admit a patient, follow the patient for three weeks and watch the patient deteriorate right in front of my eyes.
The patient is not even 30. Young children at home. I doubt the patient will be...

Photo Challenge: BP
Photo reply with a picture of old Bettie Page. I’m guessing that there will only be one photo of senior-citizen Bettie, but I’m hoping to be surprised.

3 Hots and a Cot
Today I was seriously upset at a particular patient. I felt like personally kicking him out of the hospital and going off on him for being a drain on our system and wasting tax-payer money.
His problems are his own doing. And then he comes in for some complaint. We tell him he cannot smoke. After a day or so he gets tired of it and leaves against medical advice (AMA).
A few days later he is...

Ugh
I’m tired. Long day. Got to the hospital and within a few hours discovered that our team had lost two patients. And by lost, I mean passed away.
I need a vacation.
Vegas sounds nice. It’s only 3 hours away. But no. I’m on call tomorrow. Whoopee.

Autopsy Lesson to the First Year Medical Students
iamziyad:
A professor is giving the first year medical students their first lecture on autopsies, and decides to give them a few basics before starting.
“You must be capable of two things to do an autopsy. The first thing is that you must have no sense of fear.”
At this point, the professor sticks his finger into the dead man’s anus, pulls it out, and then licks it. He asks all the...

MIAMI — Burglars snorted the cremated remains of a man and two dogs in the mistaken belief that they had stolen illegal drugs, Florida sheriff’s deputies said Wednesday.
Comma?
Attending physician was talking about the comma that should not have been printed. I searched and searched before I realized he was talking about the apostrophe.

Overheard In The ED →
Another new post at my other blog:
I remember one time when my team was on-call. It was late at night and the ED was packed. There were beds and chairs lined up in the hallway with makeshift dividers separating patients…..
